Differentiation isn’t just my Substack name, it’s my way of exploring the layers and patterns that make us who we are. The Dyslexic Thinker is my creative reminder of the girl who used to overthink and her late dyslexia diagnosis.

Born in Mauritius, where stories are passed down through generations like family heirlooms, I grew up surrounded by storytelling and journaling. My parents used their diaries like breathing, so writing quickly became my ‘first voice.’ It was a quiet but loud way for an introvert to be heard.

School wasn’t my thing, but my teacher dad introduced me to reading as a hobby. It was a privileged game-changer, detective and adventure genres interested me far more than academic books. When my parents couldn’t keep up with my book wish list, they got me a junior library card. It was my first unhealthy relationship, I lost sleep and won panda eyes.

A set of children’s encyclopaedias made me curious about society and rules, inspiring me to study law. Life’s plot twists led me to work in higher education, gaining experience in how teaching and learning are delivered in practice. This gave me a perspective far removed from the theoretical policies I’d once read about when I felt let down by the education system as a teenager.

Adulthood might be a rollercoaster, but it keeps pushing me toward storytelling beyond words. Film and photography help me see life in ways writing alone can’t. Yet, words are my boomerang, always pulling me back to the centre—where storytelling feels most at home. And now to Substack.
